The painting is signed "Hugo V.P." for Hugo Vilfred Pedersen (1870-1959), a well-listed Danish artist.He studied at The Academy of Fine Art in Copenhagen between 1886-1892 and then under Henningsen at the School of Modelling.He travelled around the world seven times in his life and painted scenes in England, Indonesia, India, German, China, Japan and the US.He lived in India for 12 years.He exhibited internationally, throughout the US and in China, Europe and India.He became a renowned painter in the British Indian colonies..

Several of Hugo’s most significant works were created in India, where he soon became known as “the Rajah painter”.The princes were queuing up to be portrayed by the Danish painter, who was busy trying to keep up with the orders.The princes wanted the portraits to be a display of pomp, lavishness and splendour.
He lived a luxurious life especially during the two years he stayed at the palace of the Maharaja of Burdwan.During this time, he created an astonishing 18 portraits of the maharaja.

Besides the many portraits, he also depicted architecture as well as the general population particularly in India.Precisely the immortalising of the local population proved difficult, as their religion prohibited just that – to be immortalised.Several people allowed him, however, to portray them, if they were certain the picture would be destroyed immediately afterwards.Therefore, the artist usually had to tear out the drawing from his sketchbook and give it to the person portrayed, who first studied it enthusiastically but then tore it into pieces.What people did not know was that the drawing had been transferred onto the next sheet of paper in the sketchbook by means of carbon paper.This way, Hugo V.Pedersen was able to hold on to his memories of the people he met and the places he visited.
